Discovering the Hidden Gem of San Vicente, Palawan: A Travel Diary

Dates of Stay: December 7, 2023 – December 16, 2023

Nestled between the more famous destinations of Puerto Princesa and El Nido, San Vicente in Palawan is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Not to be confused with Port Barton which is just another Barangay of San Vicente a 2 hours long trip apart since the road is not yet well developed. My recent trip from December 7th to December 16th, 2023, was nothing short of magical. Here’s a glimpse into my journey through this serene paradise.

Day 1: Daparture Manila T4, Arrival and First Impressions

This was one of the earliest flights going out of Manila for me. I arrived at Terminal 4 at Ninoy Aquino International Airport at around 3 AM. I used Sunlight Air for the first time and the departure was at 5:30 AM. It is a small turboprop Airplane (ATR 72-500) with around 74 Seats only and since it was not fully booked it feels almost like a private Jet. It is the only joyce to fly there (without charter private flights of course) from Manila and/or via Clark International Airport. There will be allegedly some changings about new routes (incl. Cebu) and Airlines from December 2024 on.

After almost 1 1/2 hrs. flight I arrived at San Vicente Airport, a small but efficient gateway to this tranquil town. I was able to see our accommodation short before landing because of the red color of its roof. The warm tropical breeze and the sight of lush greenery instantly put me in vacation mode after leaving the airplane. My Tricycle driver was awaiting me already at the arrival point and brings me in just 20 minutes to my Accommodation. I checked into my cozy and big room on the 2nd floor at La Bella Swiss Inn in Barangay New Agutaya , which offered a nice Balcony and big room, only a 10 Minutes walk to the ocean.

Day 2-3: Exploring Long Beach

San Vicente has a Total of 14km stretch of fine sandy beaches segmented in different bays and beaches. The biggest of all is the so called Long Beach (other sections are Enarayan Beach, Bokbok Beach, Tagpis Beach, Alimanguan Beach & Erawan Beach). This pristine stretch of sand is perfect for leisurely walks, sunbathing, and swimming. I spent my first full day here, soaking up the sun and enjoying the crystal-clear waters. Unfortunately I did not protect me with Coconut oil so I was able to get stung by Sandflies (called Niks Niks by locals).

Day 4: Island Hopping Adventure

One of the highlights of my trip was an island-hopping tour. We visited several beautiful islands, including Starfish Island and Exotic Island. Snorkeling in the vibrant coral reefs and lounging on secluded beaches made for an unforgettable day.

Day 5-6: Cultural Immersion

San Vicente is not just about beaches; it also offers a rich cultural experience. I visited the local market, where I sampled fresh seafood and tropical fruits. The friendly locals shared stories about their traditions and way of life, making me feel truly welcomed.

Day 7: Trekking to Pamuayan Falls

For a change of scenery, I embarked on a trek to Pamuayan Falls. The hike through the lush forest was invigorating, and the sight of the cascading waterfall was a rewarding end to the journey. A refreshing dip in the cool waters was the perfect way to relax after the trek.

Day 8-9: Relaxation and Reflection

I spent the next couple of days unwinding at my resort. The tranquil environment provided the perfect backdrop for some much-needed relaxation. I indulged in spa treatments and enjoyed quiet moments by the beach, reflecting on the beauty of San Vicente.

Day 10: Sunset at Bato ni Ningning

No trip to San Vicente is complete without witnessing the sunset at Bato ni Ningning. The panoramic views from this vantage point are breathtaking, with the sky painted in hues of orange and pink. It was a serene and picturesque end to my day.

Day 11-12: Discovering Port Barton

A side trip to the nearby village of Port Barton included in the Island Hopping Tour as last stop was another highlight. Known for its laid-back vibe and stunning beaches, Port Barton offered a different but equally charming experience.

Day 13: Mangrove Forest Tour

San Vicente’s mangrove forests are a vital part of its ecosystem. I took a guided tour through the mangroves, learning about their importance and the efforts to preserve them. The tour was both educational and visually stunning.

Day 14: Farewell to Paradise

As my trip came to an end, I spent my last day revisiting my favorite spots and savoring the local cuisine one last time. The fresh seafood and tropical flavors were a delightful way to conclude my stay.

Final Thoughts

San Vicente, Palawan, is a destination that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and tranquility. My stay was filled with unforgettable experiences and cherished memories. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, San Vicente has something for everyone. I can’t wait to return to this hidden paradise.
